The Development of Depression Scale of the Korean Long Term Care Hospital Elderly Inpatient

Abstract

|
This study is a methodological research to develop a scale to measure the level of depression of the Korean elderly inpatients. The data collection for validity and reliability tests was done during October 7th and November 2nd by the comprehensive survey research of 701 elderly inpatients in 27 long-term care hospitals participating in the long term care hospital national health insurance project. The validity and reliability test for this study includes factor analysis, concurrent validity test, and the validity test consists of internal-consistency Cronbach Coefficient Alpha and test-retest reliability test. As the result of 13 items, factor is named as emotional, physical, Psycho-social, behavioral. When analyzing the four factors, it explained the 60.8% of the total variance. The Pearson coefficient for the developed depression rating scale and K-GDS was found to be r=0.53(p=0.0001), Cronbach’s a of the over-all internal consistency(Cronbach’α=0.89), and test-retest reliability scored 0.97. Conclusively, the depression rating scale for the elderly inpatients in the long-term care hospital developed in this study has passed a variety of validity and reliability tests and may be applied to measure the degree of the depression of the elderly inpatients.
